Why is this important? |
Las Baulas de Guanacaste National Marine Park protects one of the main nesting sites for the Tropical Eastern Pacific leatherback sea turtle. This subpopulation is critically endangered due to different threats, including climate change, egg poaching, habitat destruction, human intrusion, introduction of exotic species and indiscriminate fishing.
As a mechanism to promote environmental education and ecological tourism, the Matapalo Local Guides Association (ASOCAVE) together with the administration of the National Park, offer the leatherback turtle sighting tour during the nesting season (October 20 to March 15 ). |
WE CONTRIBUTE TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTThis project seeks increase the economic benefits to small countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of tourism; as well as improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
