In what consist this walk?

This field trip is an exclusive educational experience about the nesting process, research and importance of sea turtles on the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The trip begins with the welcome and presentation of the team in Playa Grande. Then, it is followed with the visit to the sea turtle monitoring project Kuemar in Matapalo, in which their field team leaders will explain about their research work and the monitoring of sea turtles in the nesting beaches of Nombre de Jesús, Real and Zapotillal. In the same way, the regulations for visiting these nesting beaches will be given here. Finally, the arrival to the beach Nombre de Jesús, to start with the wildlife sighting walk, the explanation about its biology and challenges for its conservation.

Sea turtle sightings are not guaranteed, since it is a natural event that depends on their behavior. However, the chances of their sighting increase between October and March. These beaches are publicly accessible, some tour guides might be present.

Why is this important?

Costa Rica's North Pacific beaches are important areas for the reproduction of sea turtles. On these beaches, there is mostly the visit of the black or Pacific green turtle (Chelonia mydas), considered by the IUCN as endangered. For this reason, the dissemination of environmental protection and awareness measures are crucial tools to achieve conservation objectives. This walk is part of an ecotourism project for the promotion of sustainable development.
