In what consist this JOURNEY? |
This 7-day journey seeks to involve people in supporting the different research and citizen science projects that we develop to protect endangered species in the Las Baulas National Marine Park in Guanacaste and to promote ecological connectivity in the Baulas - Conchal Coastal Marine Biological Corridor.
People are expected to experience collaborative work with community leaders together with other volunteers, and experience a close-up of conservation efforts in the North Pacific of Costa Rica. During the event, topics related to human development, waste management, adaptation and mitigation mechanisms to climate change, and coexistence with wildlife will be discussed. Some of the activities volunteers help are in: - Wildlife
- Community

Why is this important? |
The Las Baulas National Marine Park in Guanacaste is a protected area that goes unnoticed by many, yet this site remains a refuge for many species, including several threatened with extinction such as the leatherback turtle of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (Dermochelys coriacea) that comes to lay eggs, the yellow-naped parrot (Amazona auropalliata) or the endemic mangrove hummingbird (Amazilia boucardi).
This national park protects more than 26,000 marine hectares, wetlands of global importance for migratory birds and a vital coastal strip for the reproduction of many species, mainly sea turtles, as well as the green iguana (Iguana iguana), crabs and a variety of mollusks. On the other hand, the Baulas Conchal Coastal Marine Biological Corridor is an initiative that seeks ecological connectivity through the integration of community efforts to protect animals such as the howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) or the Pacific green turtle (Chelonia mydas agassizii), critically affected by the growth of urban development. In alliance with different organizations and under the scheme of citizen science, we carry out monitoring projects of different indicators, which are necessary for more informed decision-making, and also invite people to take part in the search for joint solutions. |
Contribuimos al desarrollo sostenibleThis project seeks to increase the economic benefits that small least developed countries derive from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of tourism; as well as to sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and to take measures to restore them in order to restore ocean health and productivity.
