in what consist this Expedition? |
This expedition consists of a guided tour, accompanied by research assistants, to the excavation and exhumation process of turtle nests, to learn about the hatching success, the different stages of embryonic development and the number of surviving turtles.
We begin with an introductory talk about Sostenibilidad en Grande and Kuemar and how we're doing sea turtle conservation efforts in the Baulas-Conchal coastal marine biological corridor. Then, on the nesting beach, we will learn about the laying and incubation dynamics of sea turtles and the importance of this coastal ecosystem for the reproduction of these species and their role in nature. Next, in accompaniment to researchers, we will excavate already hatched nests, to learn about and determine the hatching success and possible stages of development of the embryos that did not hatch. Sometimes, baby turtles appear that did not manage to leave the nest; we will accompany the survivors in the release at the end of the afternoon. Finally, upon returning to the starting point, a brief explanation will be given about the Marine Debris Laboratory and we would like to talk about human development, waste management, adaptation and mitigation mechanisms to climate change, and coexistence with wildlife. |
Why is this important? |
Sea turtles are vital species for maintaining life in the sea, yet the survival of the species is at risk due to different human activities such as overfishing, plastic pollution and other larger-scale activities as climate change. Promoting knowledge about the life of these species and their role in nature facilitates raising people's awareness of actions that mitigate or reduce some of their threats.
To address an environmental crisis of pollution and destruction, it is necessary to bring closer the reality that species face and the opportunity to get to know them up close. We expect that attendees will participate in the analysis and discussion of possible solutions. |
WE CONTRIBUTE TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTThis project seeks increase the economic benefits to small countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of tourism; as well as improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
